Parent guidance is an integral part of play therapy. It stimulates and supports your child’s therapeutic process. It is important for the child to feel their parents’ permission to attend play therapy.
Parent guidance is available for you as a parent, alongside your child’s play therapy trajectory. Consider questions such as: how do I best respond when my child becomes angry or anxious? How do I stay attuned during a divorce, relocation, or other significant event? And how do I ensure that I, as a parent, continue to support my child’s process? In parent consultations, we reflect on these matters together—practically and without judgment.
When parents are separated, we strive to involve both parents in the treatment. It is important for the child to know that they have permission from both parents to work on their concerns. That they are free to play and talk about the events that occupy their mind.
Sometimes the therapist may invite you to come and play together with your child for a number of sessions. This allows you to gain even more insight into following and attuning to your child through play. Extra attention is then given to contact and interaction at the child’s level (while they are engaged in play). You can also further explore your child’s (inner) world. The therapist’s role is then primarily one of coaching and mirroring.
Every parent will agree: every child is unique. That is beautiful, but it can also make things complicated. Especially at moments when your child needs extra support.
That is why we do not work with fixed step-by-step plans or predetermined methodologies. Together, we want to look at what the child needs and what you need to help your child.
